I'm still not 100% sure whether or not I like this poem. The way it pits an old male philosopher against a young vacuous female seems ever so slightly sexist, but the fact that it's been commended in two separate competitions suggests that maybe I'm overthinking this. | I'm still not 100% sure whether or not I like this poem. Inspiration
The Orange Girl and the Philosopher started life as an entry into the monthly Dorrie's Challenge on the SlingInk writing forum, in November 2008. The prompt that month was "Celebrity", and The Orange Girl and the Philosopher was - much to my surprise - voted first out of ten entries.
Placings
The Orange Girl and the Philosopher was highly commended in the Autumn 2009 JBWB Poetry Competition.
I sent it to one or two other places after that, but without any great enthusiasm, as I still wasn't entirely sure if it was any good. Then I sent it to the 2015 YorkMix Poetry Competition, where it was commended, by the judge Carole Bromley.
Notes
I'm still not 100% sure whether or not I like this poem. The way it pits an old male philosopher against a young vacuous female seems ever so slightly sexist, but the fact that it's been commended in two separate competitions suggests that maybe I'm overthinking this.
